The first time Bert had the opportunity to perform for a large public was with the band Treshold as the opening act for Kayak and Golden Earring at the prestigious revue Sarasani in Texel (Netherlands)
The hardrockband “Vandenberg” is formed and Bert becomes the singer. Before that Bert sang in a number of less famous regional bands. Under the guidance of their manager Kees Baars, “Vandenberg” signed an international record contract with the famous American recording company “Atlantic”.
Their 1st album was recorded in the studio owned by Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin. Vandenberg’s single “Burning Heart” was a huge hit in the Netherlands and America. They toured extensively throughout the USA.
The second album “Heading for a Storm” produced the hit single “Different Worlds”. Vandenberg broke trough in Japan.
The follow up album “Alibi” was successful in the Netherlands and in Japan but not so populair in the USA or UK, mainly due to lack of promotion there.
The video “Live in Japan” was recorded. “Vandenberg” split, due to irreconcilable differences 1986
Bert joined the Dutch heavy metal group “Picture” however they were not commercially successful, split up a year later.
Bert, together with ex- Vandenberg base guitarist Dick Kemper, formes the hardrockband “Undercover”. They recorded 2 albums. Bert is asked regulary to use his voice in advertising commercials.
As a result of the TV Commercial for Heineken, the album “Storm after the Quiet” is born. Bert sang Dutch versions of famous pop classics such as “The heat is on”, “More then a feeling” and ”Black Velvet. Translated by amongst others Peter Koelewijn, Jaap Eggermont, Barry Hay and Huub van der Lubbe. The album is successful and deliveres a few hits.
The 2nd solo album “Clear Sighted Blindness” is released, having the same formula as it’s predecessor. Bert performes for the athletes and officials at the Olympic games in Atlanta. He also makes guest appearences with the “Thuisband” a group that makes “heavy ”versions of well known Dutch artists including “Het Goede Doel”, “The Scene”and “Doe Maar”.
The contract with CNR had expired and Bert joined Dino where he worked on his new repertoire. The 1st single written by Han Koorneef en Bert Meulendijk was called “Dazzeling”. Bert was a guest artist at the concert of the Dutch group “De Kast”. He performed the songs Juli July and “As free as a bird”.
Bert performes regulary as solo artist or with De Thuisband. He was honored to be asked to sing the Dutch version of the songs composed by Phil Collins for the Disney film “Tarzan”. A huge success!
The single “The Parting”and album “Just in Time” are released. The albums included lyrics by Huub van der Lubbe and Babette van Veen. Bert tours as the new singer with Kayak. After the success of singing in the Disneyfilm “Tarzan”, Bert is asked to perform a song in the Dutch version of the American hit Chrismas movie “The Grinch”.
Bert sings the “Cruelle Deville”song in the Dutch version of Disney’s “102 Dalmatians”. He is also to be heared on the live cd from Kayak and from April on he tours with this band. Under the name “Linksoup” Bert does a summer tour with the band “Link” and Peter Groot Kormelink.
In the autumn Bert tours troughout the Netherlands together with erik Mesie ( “Toontje Lager”) and Peter Groot Kormelink (“ Jazzpolitie” and “Splitsing”) with an 80’s rock show “Raise the Roof”. Bert sings “Blue skies are for free” in the national song festival. The song is written by Ad Olm and Eric Dikeb. Bert could be seen in theatres throughout the Netherlands performing in the rock opera “Tommy” with the Royal Dutch Airforce Orchestra.
Bert gets trough to the first round of the national song festival. With Kayak he makes another album and tour: “Merlin”.
Bert starts to work on a new album of his own in the studio of Roy Klein Entink.

Bert makes his last tour with the band Kayak performing “Nostradamus” throughout the Dutch theatres again. Bert starts working together with singer Esther Hart and Laura Vlasblom on the theatre tour “Queen in Concert” with the Royal Dutch Airforce Orchestra, which becomes a hugely populair and successfull tour. “Vandenberg” brings out de DVD “Live in Japan”.
After “Queen in Concert” Bert was asked to perform together with Jan Akkerman at the KidsRights Gala in Rotterdam. The performance received a standing ovation. Other artists included Bill Wyman and the Temptations.
The English album “Purify” is released in November after 2 years of preparation. This album contains his own work with contributions of his sister Saskia Heerink and guitarist Joost Vergoossen.
Bert is seen more often as a guest singer with large orchestras. He intergrates his own repertoire with songs from amongst other Frank Sinatra. Bert is involved with the theatretour “Symphonic Echoes of Pink Floyd. He performed with co-singers Erik Mesie and Antonie Kamerling throughout Belgium and Holland.
The North Netherland Orchestra tours again trough the Netherlands with “Pink Floyd”’, with Chris Zegers at the place of Antonie. In the city of Hoogeveen (Netherlands) Bert is honored to have his handprint eternally imprinted in cement in the “Walk of Veen” next to other great artists as the “Golden Earring” and Marco Borsato. In Groningen on December the 6th while performing for 3000 people Bert is surprised and very much honored to receive a medal of distinction from her Majesty, queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. He becomes a member of “Orange Order of Nassau”, for his contribution to rock and pop music.
Bert contributes to the second album of “Voices of Rock” produced by German Michael Voss and Chris Lausmann with other great singers such as Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner and Paul Shortino.
As a result of his contribution he received an offer to make an album of his own with a.o. songwriters Harry Hess, Russ Ballard, Paul Young and Jeff Silbar. The album called “Better Yet” will be released on the 25th of September and will have the single track “Panic Attack” out around the same time.
Soon after the start of the Better Yet-tour, the album single ‘’Panic Attack’’ reached the top 100 and stays there for 15 weeks. Eventually, the single has reached the 9th place!
In April, Bert and Steve Lukather (Toto) are present at the stage of the EDA ceremony and perform together. Bert is again responsible for hosting the show.
The TT circuit Assen celebrates the 80th edition of the TT. Bert and his band are responsible for the press conference, due to the fact that the single ‘’All fired up’’, another single from the album ‘’Better Yet’’, has been chosen as the music for the presentation video for the international press. During the event, the over one hundred thousand visitors can hear the song due to the sky-high video walls around the circuit.
A highlight of that year is the presence of Brian May at the Eddie Christiani Award, as winner of that guitar price. The event, organized bij Poppunt Zeeland, that, due to the efforts of Bert and his partner Irma, has grown to an international event, received great press attention because of it. Furthermore, the preparations for a new theater tour of Bert have started.
Jan Akkerman askes Bert to go on tour with him performing “My Brainbox” as a special 65 birthday celebration for Jan.It turns out to be a highly succesfull cooperation. The tour is prolonged for 2013. The newest Holiday on Iceshow “Speed” contains 5 songs performed by Bert and tours through 5 Europian countries. The Dutch premiere is on October 18th 2012.
Bert is asked to be the new frontman of the Pink Floyd Project,considered to be the best Pink Floyd Tributeband of the Netherlands. ( see www.pfp.nl) The very well received showcase on April 28th in his hometown Hoogeveen is reason enough to bring the show to Germany as well.
On June 1st Akkerman & Heerink performed on the famous Retropopfestival where over 12.000 visitors not just enjoyed `My Brainbox`but also watched Status Quo, Alphaville, Racoon and Chic.
The professional documentary about Berts first band Threshold has it´s premiere on October 6th. The band obviously was the cradle of `Vandenberg`; both Dick Kemper and Bert, part of Threshold lateron became worldfamous with the songs `Burning Heart`and `Different Worlds`.
