When camaraderie meets experience, incredible music is made. The camaraderie we speak of began when Morgan Freed, Stephen Soss, and Jerrod Bettis began experimenting in Jerrod’s home studio. The tracks that ensued led the group to quickly organize the indie rock/pop trio “Scouts”. Now finishing their debut at Clearlake Audio in Burbank, CA, the much anticipated album is a culmination of the Indie Rock/Pop sensibilities that have quickly made their marks on the music industry.
Much is lost in the transition between songwriter and recording artist, which is why Scouts has elected to create their debut release without the assistance of outside funding. The goal: to create a sound that is honest and infectious, giving fans an artist they can connect with, and know that the live performance will, indeed, live up to the recorded product.
Jerrod Bettis (drums, keys, vocals) began exploring his musical abilities at the age of 3, and the moment that he was able to comprehend lyrical meanings and chord structures, songwriting became his passion. At 13 years old, Jerrod began touring. As his skills developed, producing tracks became an obsession. Now, with more than 6 years of production experience, he is combining his studio capabilities with a lifetime of songwriting experience, creating a sound that is as infectious as it is fundamental. His dual role of track producer and percussionist allow Jerrod to construct the tracks from the inside and later refine them from his perch in front of the sound board. In the initial releases from Scouts, Jerrod showcases a level of experience gained through writing with artists such as OneRepublic, Adele, Gavin Degraw, Howie (Backstreet Boys), and Ashlyn Huff. To further his credentials, he has produced a wide variety of Indie bands, helping him to gain perspective on the industry as a whole and develop a sound that encompasses all of the greatest elements of modern independent rock/pop. Introduced to Morgan and Stephen through mutual business associates, musical chemistry was immediately noted, and the recording process began.
Stephen Soss (guitars, keyboards) is a “jack of all trades” of sorts, as his musical abilities span a variety of instruments. His experience in the Denver music scene, primarily writing, recording, and performing with Ska and Metal bands, has led to proficiency playing the piano, trumpet, banjo, guitar, and harmonica. These instruments come in handy when Scouts decides that some added texture is necessary in the studio.
Tucson, AZ was the backdrop for Morgan Freed’s (vocals, guitar) development as a musician. Spending the early years of his career in metal bands, Morgan had graduated to Indie, Pop, and Punk projects. While the experiences in Tucson helped to shape his style and improve his musicianship, it wasn’t until Morgan moved to California and met Stephen and Jerrod that he felt that he had finally found the team that he had been looking for…
Taking pride in the independently funded project, the members of Scouts spent more than a decade of writing, performing, and touring with other acts until finally finding each other. The end result is a sound that directly reflects the friendships and shared influences amongst the trio, lending credibility to an industry that has long relied on well-funded, overly produced artists.
Scouts is a refreshing take on the Indie songwriting technique, helping to blend the systematic power produced in heavier acts while managing to maintain and deliver the elements of pop that have defined an entire generation.
Expectations abound for Scouts - the self-funded, independently produced trio that is a culmination of mutual respect, shared goals, and a desire to earn industry respect by delivering tracks that incite an emotional connection between audience and act.
