I started playing drums seriously when I was about 13 years old. I remember seeing my father playing in a local marchingband and was stunned by the power of the drums. From then I knew that it was something I really needed to investigate more. My first years of playing were mainly in orchestras and marchingbands. Two teachers that helped me during this time was Thomas Åstrand and Pelle Fager, who gave me alot of inspiration.
When I was about 15 years old, a teacher of mine, Lars-Erik ”Sigge” Olofsgård, gave me a record with a drummer that I hadn´t heard of before. It was Dave Weckl with Chick Corea Acoustic Band (Alive) and I was shocked hearing this kind of drumming.
I started playing along with these records, the best I could, and bought lots of records trying to figure out what he did.
After studies at a music highschool in Oskarshamn for 3 years I joined the army for 10 months, playing in Swedish Royal Army Band. After applying to different musical universities in Sweden, I moved to Piteå, northern part of Sweden, studying at the Studiomusician Programme. My teacher and good friend, Joakim Ekberg, was a very important factor in my development during those years.
I got the chance to study at the famous ”Musicians Institute” in Hollywood and getting the opportunity to watch my heros play at clubs like ”The Baked Potato”, and even to hang with them, was a dream come true. Even more, participating in the competition ”Carlos Vega Memorial Scholarship” and winning the 1st price was a big event for me. When I came back to sweden, I started freelancing in different musicals, shows and other constellations. Moving to Stockholm in 2007, I got the honour to meet one of the best teacher I´ve ever had, Robert Sundin. He made me start thinking about music and practising in a totally new way and still is a big inspiration for me.
Writing music has been a big part of my musicianship the last couple of years. Therefore, I started my own band ”Jonathan Lundberg Band”, which plays mostly fusionoriented music written by members of the band. I´m very happy to have a band with so talented musicians, who brings their creative ideas to the table, and which can cope with my twisted musical ideas and still be friends with me.
