American Royal interview

American Royal
Submitted by Rick Huisseune on 2006-03-26
Imagine a mixture of Evan & Jaron, The Rembrandts and Lowen & Navarro, what will you get ? A fine result of the most wonderful harmonic duo performances of all time. And theres no better way to describe this unique brotherhood band American Royal ! Cameron and Trevor Lynch both born, raised and hailed in the Kansas City district form the heart of American Royal and just released the "Transcontinental" album which contains in many ways the most perfect melodic effort of the year so far ! I was blessed to hear their relaxing vocals, if youre (just like me) into above mentioned bands, then look no further and youll melt after you expierenced "Transcontinental".....
1) When did both brothers got into music from starters ?
American Royal: We started playing music in our basement around age 10. Cam played the guitar and I played the drums. I learned to play the guitar by watching where my brother put his fingers as he called out the chords to our bassist. We were in a "fake" band in high school called The Doubting Thomass

"Transcontinental" is a very harmonic release, is this your > debut album ?
American Royal: Its our debut album with a full band performing with my brother and myself. We spent 1 day in a studio in 2000 and made a record called Picture Perfect Town. It?s alluded to in the song Angelina. The sound quality is really crappy, but we got to play a lot of fun shows because of that record. I also did an EP two years ago called Songs from a Generals Son. Its available on iTunes under my name, Trevor Lynch.

How did you guys originally got the attention of Cary Pierce and > his label ?
American Royal: When we were in college, Cary was still very much involved with Jackopierce and the band would come up to Ithaca New York (where Cameron went to college) we would open for them. In late 2004, we sent him some of the songs we had been working on and he loved the idea of making a record with us. He thought we had a long way to go, and very few of the songs wed written actually made the final product. But we are better for it, I think.

Opener songs such as "Angelina" and "Nancy Jane", were these > songs based on real girls ?
American Royal: The stories are real, but the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the broken hearted.

Do you guys have your own touring band, if so, whos in it ?
American Royal: Because we live on opposite coasts we actually have 3 different bands - One here in LA, one in Kansas City, and one in DC. We rely heavily on our studio musician friends to back us up on stage. The 2 people that contribute more to our live shows are Dan Weller and David Guy Simmons. Both are honorary members of American Royal

What would you think of a tour with Evan & Jaron, The Rembrandts > and Lowen & Navarro ? Cos your all in the same vein, agree?
American Royal: We are in the same vein as those artists. Ive always loved the Rembrandts. Id jump at the opportunity to play with any of those people. Were also trying to develop a following in the alt-country markets. So bands like Scott Miller and the Commonwealth, Jack Ingram, and the Drive by Truckers would be great for us also

I like to have Trevors and Camerons favorite song of the album > and why ?
American Royal: My personal favorite is ?Good Enough?. Its about a friend of mine who was going through a really ugly divorce. I think anyone whos ever had their heart broken can relate to every lyric of that song. Camerons is Right Girl. He loves the idea of driving across the country with a girl you dont know too well, but wanna learn more about, and fast...

Personally i prefer "Goodluck, Goodbye" as my favorite song, > pretty good story too, who delivers the lyrics mainly, Trevor, > Cameron or Cary ?
American Royal: This is a "Trevor" song, and it?s my 2nd favorite on the record. Its actually a great story about rural America before news came at you a mile a minute when people would actually huddle around the radio to listen to what was going on in the world. That, and, of course falling in love with a girl who will eventually break my heart.

If Trevor lives in L.A. and Cameron in Washington D.C., how do > they rehearse as a band ?
American Royal: We actually spend a lot of time on the phone and internet working through parts of tunes for live performances. Well also record ourselves live and bounce mp3s back and forth. Its is by far the most interesting way Ive ever heard of a band rehearsing. Well also send those files to Cary and he will give us tips and pointers about how to make our live show as great as possible.

American Royal, its a beautiful name for a band, but where did > you get this from ?
American Royal: The American Royal is the largest live stock and cattle show in America. It takes place every year in Kansas City (where we grew up). Our Grandfather was a cattle farmer and it just kind of fit. Also our dad was a fighter pilot (think TOP GUN "maverick", "Goose") and his call sign was "Royal" It put everything we wanted into a name. We wanted to represent the Midwest without calling ourselves something stupid like KANSAS :)

Did you know that?

Temple of the Dog was an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. It was conceived by vocalist Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as a tribute to his friend, the late Andrew Wood, lead singer of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The line-up included Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass guitar (both ex-members of Mother Love Bone), Mike McCready on lead guitar, Matt Cameron on drums, and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) providing some lead and backing vocals.
