The Blue Poets interview
| Marcus Deml, as a guitarplayer has owned his place in the music industry.
He is present on over 300 recordings, owns his own record label and is also know for his time in Errorhead.
Recently he gathered a brand new band, "The Blue Poets" to go back to his roots, blues with deep and personal lyrics.
|Who are your main musical influences?
As far as guitarists are concerned: Blackmore, Hendrix,Winter, Gallagher, Gary Moore,SRV
Holdsworth, Mclaughlin, Eivind Aarset, Michael Sagmeister, Tom Knauer, Frank Wolf and many
With bands I pretty much love all the 70”s Rockbands. It seems like they only cared about the
music.I like also different artists like Bjork and Portishead. At home I mostly listen to the Classical
Radio station. At home I don”t want to hear electric music for a change.
Which song by another artist would you have loved to have written yourself?
Michelle by the Beatles or Little Wing by Hendrix.
Pick three albums that you would take to a deserted island?
Band of Gypsies by Hendrix, After hours by Gary Moore, “The 4 Planets” by Gustav Holst.
Can you describe the importance of music in your life?
I think it is the most importent thing in my life. It helps me to deal with people and all the
problems in life. My family and loved ones are very importent too, but I think I would be mentally
sick, if I wouldn”t be a musician.
What's the strongest memory of your career?
Every morning when I wake up, I remember that I”ve never worked another job in my
Life….which is the same great feeling as playing in front of 6000 people.
Which goals in life did you achieve and which ones do you have left?
I think I”ve achieved pretty much everything. I play only my own music for a living and run my
own band and label. I have fans all over the world and I”ve made a few records that I am proud of.
If you could start over, would you have approached your carreer differently?
Do you have an important topic which you need to share through your music?
Hippie stuff like Respect and Love.
What is your perspective about the musical climate today?
There are too many people who just want to be famous. You can hear it in their music.
The competition amongst some artist is also very unhealthy.
However, there some artist who embrace the pure spirit of music.
How were The Blue Poets formed as a band?
I wanted to do a Blues Rock record. I wrote and preproduced the album all by myself, and then
went to find the right people for it.It”s the same way I work with Errorhead.
You've worked with different bands and artists in the past. Now you state you are returning to your
roots as a musician. Can you describe what formed you as the guitarist today?
That”s difficult to answer ; because I think that your personality, your whole life, your musical
influences and positive or traumatic experiences form you as a musician and instrumentalist.
Can you tell us something about the different characters in the band.
Is anyone supersticious, or having unusual habits etcetera..?
The most importent thing in any band is that everybody likes each other like a brother. If you
don”t have that chemistrie it”s not going to work and it also won”t matter how good everybody
Of course all musicians have very strange habit...but you should ask them personaly;-)
What are your favoutite songs on the new album and why?
Alien Angel. It just moves me. I am proud of the composition and Gordon just sings fantastic.
Can you tell us something about the process regarding writing and recording the album?
I write, preproduce and play, sing everything by myself. Then I introduce it to the guys and we
record it. In this case mostly live with a few overdubs.
What's the best and worst during this process?
You go through ups and downs on a regular basis. ...but you know when something is happening...
Can you tell us something more about the idea/message behind the album?
This album was my therapy. I”ve lost a few loved ones in the last two years, and this album was
What are the touring plans?
Play as much as we can.
Can you tell us about what to expect when attending one of the upcoming tour gigs?
We are playing every gig like our life depends on it. It is pure passion with a lot of sweat;-)
Best personal tour memory so far?
A lady walked up to my a week ago and said that my playing made her forget all the troubles in
her life for the last two hours.
Can you tell us what it feels like when you are performing on stage?
It feels a bit different every night depending on the crowd, the circumstances and the sound. But
it”s the best feeling inthe world..
Can you tell us anything about the relation you have with your close fans?
I am very grateful to have some very close fans. Some people come to 5 concerts in a row and you
get to know them.
What's the best and worst being on tour?
The hours on stage are the best. The fans are fantastic. The traveling and the lack of sleep are the
Is there anything special you do just before hitting the stage?
We have a band ritual. We gather and get into it like a sports team.
Funniest thing which ever happened to you during a show?
On a Festival I tripped over a moniter on stage, lost balance, and fell into my amps. These fell
over too and took down 4 keyboards that were standing behind my backline. It must looked like
some kind of planned slapstick since I fortunately didn”t miss a note and the amps were still
How do you see yourself in the future regarding a recording and performing artist?
I don”t think too much ahead. I will play as long as my body and mind will be able to do it.
I have my own record company, so I can release what ever I want.
What question was never asked to you in an interview which you are really waiting for, and what
would be the answer?
I don”t think I have been asked about my relationship status…. “None of your buisness” would be
the answer ;-)
