Stimulator
Submitted by Rick Huisseune on 2004-03-22
So you thought that great duets were gone .... well after the Australian Bachelor Girl there was no hope anymore for the ones who prefer good melodic catchy Pop/Rock song where a guy and girl combine their forces together. But theres brand new band called STIMULATOR who brings us a bright shining light in the dark tunnel. We spoke to Susan, the fantastic female voice of this great outfit.
STIMULATOR IS A FANTASTIC SURPRISE, THE BAND SOUNDS VERY CATCHY AND MELODIC, HOW DID YOU AND GEOFF MET EACHOTHER AND WHEN WERE YOU FORMED?
Susan Hyatt: Geoff & I met each other about a year and a half ago at an italian Restaurant. We met through Mike Oristian, a mutual friend who was playing jazz versions of Devo & XTC songs on the piano at the restaurant. We had an instant rapport & couldnt stop speaking to each other all night about music. We got together musically for the first time when I was asked to record a song for the WB TV show "Birds of Prey." I asked Geoff to write the song with me. We had such a creative connection that we decided to form a band right then & there. Mike became our keyboard player.

THIS BAND DOES REMIND ME ON MISSING PERSONS AND BERLIN BUT ALSO ON VIENNA, DEVICE AND ROMEOS DAUGHTER, DO YOU REMEMBER THOSE BANDS ?
Susan Hyatt: I cant say I do. Im surprised cuz I am a total 80s fan. You got me! I dont think we sound like Berlin or Missing Persons. I think its more that we are generating the same feeling that those bands did. Stimulator is all about having fun & being greedy for life & asking the right questions. Our whole aim is to try & be as creative as possible in 3.5 minutes. Its pure Pop Art. I love that concept & thats why I loved 80s music. People were so creative, the wilder the better. You could sing along to quirky intelligent songs - I think Stimulator is one of the few bands that is achieving that right now.

IM VERY SURPRISED THAT NO MAJOR HAS PICKED YOU UP ALREADY COS EVERY SONG SOUNDS AND HAS A LOT OF HIT POTENTIAL, ESPECIALLY "HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO". WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON ACCORDING TO YOU THAT NO MAJOR HAS GIVEN YOU A DEAL (YET) ?
Susan Hyatt: Thanks for your faith. We like to think that all of our songs are hits. Not to sound cynical but I am always surprised when I hear a good band on a major label. This is also the worst time around for the music business - most labels have gone under & 50% of the staff have been fired. I think any new signings are rare nowadays. Its the year for the independents.

AS A WONDERFUL FEMALE SINGER, WHO ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES AND WHY?
Susan Hyatt: I think Deborah Harry is the best & most original female singer of all times. She still completely blows my mind. Every time I sing a take that I think is good, I will put on "One Way or Another" and think "Fuck!" how does she do that? Her voice is so low & crazy on that song & then so sweet & angelic on "Heart of Glass."

YOU HAVE A LOT OF SONGWRITING TALENT, I ALSO BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF YOU AND GEOFF TOGETHER, WHO HAS THE BIGGEST INPUT IN THE SONGS ?
Susan Hyatt: This is a question that everyone seems to be asking & Im not sure why. Our songwriting is a completely 50/50 effort. No one has any more input than anyone else. Its a pure partnership. We are both very experienced musicians & have been sole songwriters/producers in our other projects.

I WANT TO KNOW YOUR 5 FAVE ALBUMS OF THE 80S AND 5 FAVE CDS OF THESE DAYS ?
Susan Hyatt: The 80s:
Blondie-Eat to the Beat, Devo-Freedom of Choice, Pretenders-Pretenders, Prince-Purple Rain, The Psychedelic Furs-Forever Now
Today:
The Sounds-Living in America, Nine Inch Nails-The Fragile, Peaches-The Teaches of Peache,s PJ Harvey-Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, Kylie Minogue-Fever

WHY THE "MAGIC" COVER ?
Susan Hyatt: We love Olivia & who could forget the roller-skating scenes in Xanadu? Magic is one of those few genius songs that no one dared to cover, so we had to do it.

CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS OF HOW YOU GOT IN TOUCH WITH ACTRESS GINA GHERSON AND WHAT YOU DID FOR HER ?
Susan Hyatt: She got in touch with me. She had seen me sing & play guitar in my band Pillbox. I was asked to teach her how to play guitar & act like a rockstar on stage for her film ?Prey for Rock n?Roll.? I had her throwing her guitar over her shoulder, doing the Pete Townsend swings, crowd surfing & crawling on stage like Iggy. Unfortunately not all of those moves got used but she did a great job & was totally keen to rock out the right way. You can?t go wrong with a hot chick playing a Les Paul worn w/ a very low guitar strap.

DO YOU GET ANY AIRPLAY IN THE L.A. AREA ?
Susan Hyatt: Yes our radio campaign started March 10th. You can hear Stimulator on College Radio & Specialty shows on Commercial Stations.

DID YOU PLAY IN ANY CLUBS, IF SO WITH WHAT OTHER ACTS/BANDS ?
Susan Hyatt: Yes of course. We played with Berlin, Flock of Seagulls. We just got on the WARP tour in the US which begins in July, so we are looking forward to a very busy summer!
