Matthew Mayfield is back with a new album. After the brilliant "Now You're Free" I had some expectations on this one.
Like the previous album, "A Banquet for Ghosts" was funded through Pledge Music, which means that we the fans have helped finance the record. This is a very cool way, to get the fans involved throughout the entire process.
So, is this a good record you ask? Yes it is. It is a bit more mellow and acoustic than "Now You're Free". On many songs, there is just Mayfield and his guitar. This is not a bad thing though as Mayfield has a great voice. He has a certain rawness and honesty about his voice that really appeals to me. This almost feels like a collection of carefully recorded demos, but without the feeling of anything beeing incomplete
Stand-out tracks on here are: "Ain't Much More to Say", "I Don't Know You at All", "Always Be You" and "Track You Down".
Those of you who prefered the softer slower songs on the previous album will really like this. Me, I like it, but I cannot help feeling that there is that great more up-tempo song missing. Still not a bad record by any means. In fact, this keeps growing each time I listen to it. I would not be surprised if "A Banquet for Ghosts" will end up high on my top list of albums of 2012!
