The first track on the much anticipated new Soundgarden is called Been Away For Too Long. That might be one of the biggest understatements of recent years. Although it may not be the best track of the new album it is a song that makes me wants to stand up and scream “hell yeah”! I have been waiting for a new album from these guys for what feels like forever. Chris Cornell has been around the world with Audioslave in the meantime as well as a decent solo career (with the exception for the awful Timbaland collaboration crap), but it always felt like he belonged in Soundgarden.
So how does this new album feel? It sounds good from the start. Single Non-State Actor is a gem and Kim Thayil churns out riffs like time has stood still. I hear traces from Led Zeppelin on a song like A Thousand Days Before a very good song. This may not sound like the classic Soundgarden album at first but somehow it sounds like the album they are supposed to make. One thing that is classic Soundgarden however is the voice of Chris Cornell. He goes effortlessly from the low pitch singing to high pitch and although he does not have the same aggressive style and bite as he did 20 years ago it is still a brilliant voice. Other great songs are Black Saturday and Halfway There
I know many people have been waiting for this album and it has been worth the wait. Soundgarden have taken the best of their influences and blended those with their own sound and style. Out of that mix comes a great album that sounds very modern in both style and sound. So yes Soundgarden, you have been away for too long. Do not ever do that to us again! Oh, and by the way: Welcome back!
