Review

I remember some years ago, I was trying to explain to my mother that Deftones makes beautiful music. She did not really agree, not at all actually. I was intrigued by the smooth vocals from front man Chino Moreno as a contrast to the quite heavy and complex music the band plays. I still love his voice and I think that the music is getting better and better as well. This is the second album without Chi Cheng who is still recovering from a serious car accident.

From the first couple of song things are crystal clear. You are listening to a Deftones album. All the elements that you like about the band are there, heavy, dreamy guitar riffs, soaring vocals and a tight rhythm section. Overall when I listen to these songs I get flashbacks from the brilliant White Pony album. In general this is a much more consistent album than Diamond Eyes.

Wow do they sound focused and vibrant on this album. There is such a high level among the song that it is really hard for me to pick favorites. But opening song Swerve City is a great one that sets the tone for the rest of the album. What an amazing song! Entombed is another gem with great guitar licks and a nice mood. But as I said it is really hard to pick favorites here.

I was hooked from the first song and when the album ends all I want to do press play again. I believe that this is the best Deftones album since White Pony and they have made Chi Cheng very proud. Do yourself a favor and get this album as soon as it drops in stores. This is one of the best albums of 2012. Great, great stuff indeed! And mom, you are wrong. This is beautiful music!
