Here is another album that I pretty much overlooked during 2016. Why? I really do not know as this is an album that seems to fit me quite well. I am talking about Bad Touch, the UK based band that plays southern rock ‘n roll with clear hints to Black Crowes and early days Dirty Guv’nahs. Throw in some hints of the Stones and the Who here and there and you are in the right ballpark. Just listen to the opening track One More Night and you will get what I am talking about.
Anyway, this is rock ’n roll music with lots of heart and tons of swagger, not to mention the hooks and guitar licks and solos. Singer Stevie Westwood has a very nice voice, that seems to fit this kind of music perfectly. There are lot of strong songs on here, but I especially like Heartbreaker Soulshaker, one of the more up-tempo songs, with some great riffing and vocals, kind of reminding me of Crobot. Other highlights? I would say, Take Your Time, The Mountain and he funky Made to Break. There are a couple of songs that does not hold that same standard and Let the Sun Shine is one of them.
These guys should be making it big with their radio friendly rock. I cannot see what would stop them, maybe the fact that this has all been done before. But, when the songs are good, this band shines. So, let us hope that this is a sign of things to come and that we are treated to many more albums of the same quality. Perfect for the car ride along that long, summer highway.
Before forming Fightstar, singer Charlie Simpson was in a band called Busted, who were a British pop band consisting of James Bourne (rhythm guitar), Charlie Simpson (lead guitar and occasionally drums), and Matt Willis (bass). They sold over 1 million singles and 2 million albums in the UK, winning BRIT Awards, Record Of The Year and performing on several sellout arena tours.
