Review

From South Yorkshire, UK, comes Alvarez Kings with the members Simon Thompson (vocals, guitar) and Paul Thompson (bass, keys, backup vocals), Sean Parkin (guitar) and Richard Walker (drums, samples, pads). The band was formed in 2012 and has since then created a buzz to the release with this year's Sire debut, Somewhere Between. Like other British acts like The 1975, Prides and Coasts, they deliver rock / pop with cool syntheses and relatively danceable melodies. However, this quartet is a closer to Coldplay and Snow Patrol in their sound and has a clearer arena feeling with its luxurious production.
There is not much to complain about as the record is very well-written and has a number of top class tracks such as "Cold Conscience", "Postcards from Berlin" and "Tortured & the Tears". Perhaps they are anonymous in their style as there are a number of bands with a similar style, but there are actually few that come up in the same class as Alvarez Kings, so think that they still have a lot to offer.
So if you like well-produced pop / rock with big melodies and some 80's influences, Somewhere Between is definitely an album to look up.

Did you know that?

Before forming Fightstar, singer Charlie Simpson was in a band called Busted, who were a British pop band consisting of James Bourne (rhythm guitar), Charlie Simpson (lead guitar and occasionally drums), and Matt Willis (bass). They sold over 1 million singles and 2 million albums in the UK, winning BRIT Awards, Record Of The Year and performing on several sellout arena tours.
