Review

I can imagine how it would sound like if it was 1974 and Mark Farner, guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad decided to put together a supergroup with John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) on drums, Glenn Hughes (Trapeze) on bass and lead vocals and Billy Powell (Lynyrd Skynyrd) on organ.

The result could very well be this album from Orebro, Sweden based Backwood Spirit. A band where the bandmembers has enough experience to be both the principal and teachers in the school of rock, we have Goran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, Kharma) - lead vocals, Joje Lindskoog (Crossroad Jam) - drums, Peter Emilsson (Crossroad Jam), Kent Engström - guitars/songwriter and Niclas Boson - bass.

Their self-titled debut is a well crafted album, a bluesy, southern rock affair with roots in the golden age of hard rock. This is definitely right up your alley if you´re into early Whitesnake, Free or Grand Funk Railroad.

A decade ago, a new wave of classic rock started with bands like The Answer and Rival Sons and there´s no stopping with newer acts such as Inglorious, Snakecharmer, The Night Flight Orchestra and now also Backwood Spirit.

They are flirting with Joe Walsh´s "In the city" in the melodic "When love comes around" but I don´t mind, both are great songs in their own way.
The more soulful "Ain´t got love" is one of the highlights on this 8 track album along with the groovy opener "Gimme good lovin´" and "Piece of the peach", where some of the riffs reminds me of Leslie West (Mountain).

Rock steady!
