Swedish act ZPEEDFREAK has been around for some time now. This time, on their 4th album, they have turned into a female fronted band after recruiting FELICIA DROTZ as the lead vocalist. The music is still melodic hard rock close to melodic metal at times.
In several aspects ZPEEDFREAK could be labelled as a garage band. Their sound is “dirty” in the same way as I remember that some of my own early efforts sounded when playing in garages or living rooms back in the early 80’s. But some of the songs are quite cool, like track number 2 “Ain’t got a job”. And when they slow things down a bit, like in the following tune “Not your kind” I like it. The song has got some of early JUDAS PRIEST over it.
I would like them to be more precise in the studio, though, because the “garage band label” needs to be washed away. There are too many flaws here and there; they can’t really keep the pace and Felicia’s lead vocals as well as backing vocals would have needed some more recording hours (“The world” is an example of this). The latter is a shame, really, because her voice is quite cool. Like a JOAN JETT after smoking for two decades (and it’s not meant as a negative thing, here).
