Review

Big names like Bon Jovi, The Gaslight Anthem, Glen Burtnik and Pavement started their music career playing in clubs in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
So, New Brunswick based singer/songwriter Michael Askin is off to a good start, coming from a place where music is deeply rooted in people. I come to think of New Jersey as America´s answer to Dublin, Ireland.
Michael Askin´s 3rd EP "Road by the river" is a fine mix of heartland rock and alternative country, you can tell this is a guy that likes to listen to Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. Michael´s voice feels insecure in the first seconds of "Road by the river" but he sounds more and more confident in singing, as we go further into the EP.
The title track is a good song where the groove makes me think of Chris Rea, this is music for a long drive in the car. Naming a song "Nashville" sounds just right for a guy that has his heart in country music, this is the kind of Jackson Browne-like country rock that I like.
An honest EP.
