Review

Here’s a little gem within the genre of instrumental melodic hard rock. STEVEN ANDERSON is from Gävle on the east coast of mid-Sweden and originally played in the band NASTY GROOVE (with a vinyl single out in 1991). He went solo and this full-length is a cool and rather hard-to-find item for all you guitar maniacs to try to grab… I am not sure whether the spelling “Gipsy power” is deliberate or not.

Parts of this CD is somewhat like EUROPE’s early material but instrumental, with lots of intense melodies and a touch of neo-classicalness. But it also has a slight folk:ish vibe, especially in the lead guitar melodies. Really good! There are the same vibes in “Paw-Kwa and the great monade” (which is a song that has three underlying parts). “Gipsy fly” (or rather, “Gypsy fly”) is an uptempo, intense piece with precise and cool guitar work.

If you like softer instrumental rock, “The child within” is a great example. Those of you into JANNE SCHAFFER or LASSE WELLANDER will love it. Some folk:ish vibes and very, very nice melodies here.

I forgot the oriental vibes, accentuated in the song title “Oriental Express”, and of course also within the music itself. The guitar playing from Steven is truly great, and imaginative as well. This album is highly recommended to any fan of melodic guitar rock and hard rock. (Swedish Diamonds’ series, #18)
