Artist discography

Undeliberately I seem to be picking out a lot of artists in the TOWER OF POWER genre lately, including the band itself. Here’s the band SOULSTATION from the Dalecarlian region of mid-Sweden, a 13-piece with a massive six men strong horn section!

13 members, like I said and the number 13 also speaks for the number of songs on this cool soul rock album with some westcoast & AOR twists. Naturally we find both uptempo and groovy songs, as well as softer tunes with a lot of feeling. The latter can be found in “Think about it”, where there is a vibe of ERIC GADD! Also the good, sensual ballad “Still in love with you” should be checked up, where I like the keyboard work from MATTIAS HENNINGSSON. Also check his amazing solo in “Won’t lose that groove” – another really good and funky tune, by the way.

More groovy songs like “Have to be hip” (the title track) and “Turn the funk on” are also really good here, and the band really consists of good players and singers.

“I can bet” is one of the best songs of the album. Being a little more commercial than the rest, it yet has the groove and soul ingredients that we all love. Great guitar solo by THOMAS GRANESTAD, by the way.

If there’s anything I’d like to put on the downside it would be the sound. The production by none other than PIERRE SWÄRD (also guesting on organ twice) is really good, even though the sound gets a bit dry at times. Some AOR can be found in the nice “We’ve got the power” too, mixed with some r’n’b and soul. Track 13 is a hidden track, or at least non-mentioned on the booklet, and seems to be more of a jam. Once again, great playing. (Swedish Diamonds Series, #23)
