Why complicate band names? When legends JEFF LORBER (keyboards), PAUL JACKSON JR (guitar) and EVERETTE HARP (saxophone, flute) put together this highly interesting project, they let the name speak for itself. JAZZ FUNK SOUL began in 2013, then with CHUCK LOEB (may he rest in peace) who’s now replaced by JACKSON JR on this third album.
JAZZ FUNK SOUL gives us just that. Sure, the music genre should be called jazz/fusion, but the elements are definitely jazz, funk and soul. Instrumental, though, in case you wonder.
The kind of jazz/fusion being delivered here is of the commercial type. And I love it! Anyone into late 80’s efforts by KENNY G, DAVID SANBORN or SPYRO GYRA will love this.
Try “Walkin’ with you” and we get close to RIPPINGTONS as well. Some of the same in “Windfall” where the guys are taking turn with small “solos” in a lovely way.
The production is flawless. I am very happy that not all jazz/fusion artists are going in the very jazzy way that most other bands and artist have gone. Sometimes it’s nice to let the melodies speak, instead of weird equilibristic parts and odd rhythms.
Stylewise this CD almost takes me back to 1987 when I had just moved to Stockholm and started collecting records and CD’s “for real”. A lot of the fusion albums I bought back then had a sound not far from how this sounds.
Some of the additional players on this great album are: LENNY CASTRO (percussion), MICHAEL WHITE (drums), ALEX AL (bass) and DAVID MANN (sax).
Go get this. As for myself I should listen to the previous two albums, since this is my first acquaintance with this awesome group.
