Review

The multi-instrumentalist and singer known from YES, WORLD TRADE and LODGIC (and more) BILLY SHERWOOD is back with an album, this time with yet another recording as a solo artist. “Citizen: In the next life” is a continuiation of the 2015 release “Citizen”. It is always warmly welcome when there’s new Sherwood music arriving, and this time I am happier than I was when the last WORLD TRADE album was released for example.

If you’re unaware of what this guy’s all about you should know that it’s rich and pompous AOR and rock, with splendid lead and harmony vocals. I hinted about it above, but I have to stress it again:  this is the best I’ve heard from Billy Sherwood in many years. Good variation, and it’s like he’s born again.

“Via Hawking” (song number six) is a marvellous song, for example. The YES influences are inevitable and “Sophia” bears some cool YES sounding moments. It is one of the softer songs here. Another tune to check out is “Mata Hari” with its almost oriental twists in the arrangements of the chorus. Talking about arrangements – the wonderful harmony vocals in the finishing song “Hold quiet” is worth mentioning. Billy Sherwood is truly a great singer and sometimes he sounds so much like PETER GABRIEL!

If there’s one thing I’d like Mr. Sherwood to improve, it would be the lyrics. I mean, is there any album where he does not include phrases with the words “horizon” and “universe”? It gets a bit tedious. But nonetheless, this album is a sure buy if you like progressive AOR with teeth.
