Review

The ocean of progressive metal band is almost flooding, but this band from Italy is a bit different than what we’re used to. I dare call them AOR with progressive metal tendencies, and that’s kind of what they have been aiming for too. MIND KEY caught my attention right away thanks to this, since they bring something else than the regular prog-metal or AOR bands.

The AOR:ish side shines through a lot in “Hands off Cain” which is a mid-tempo song where the keyboards have plenty of room – still with some crunchy guitar playing side by side.

The prog-metal dominates in songs like “Be polar” for example. Good stuff a bit inspired by DREAM THEATER, I imagine. Many songs are coloured by both AOR and proggish metal, like “´Hank (the blazing eyes)”.

To me it seems they are overrating their arrangement capabilities though, especially in the heavier songs. There are some rather cool twists in the chords but at times they do not really add up, and vocalist AURELIO FIERRO JR doesn’t always hang on in those twists. He’s not a bad singer, even though being a bit too hoarse and screaming for my personal taste. Imagine a Jimi Jamison with a cold.

This is good. The whole band just needs to step back a hunch when it comes to arrangements, and think them through.
