Review

The Italian label Frontiers doesn?t usually sign and release bands in the Progressive metal genre, there have been a few like Genius,Empty Tremor,Tim Donahue and now this Italian band called Mind Key that will be released in July.
Frontiers normally concentrates on AOR and melodic hard rock but it?s with great enthusiasm I welcome their interest in signing good prog metal bands like Mind Key,this quintet started back in 99 and decided to walk the same road as Symphony X and Dream Theater to name 2 respected bands of this genre.
The musicians Dario De Cicco-Keyboards,Emanuele Colella-Guitars,Lele Castaldo-Bass and Andrea Stipa-Drums are technical instrumentalists and sound like a tight unit so together with vocalist Marco Basile they are an interesting new comer of this jungle of prog metal bands.
"Journey of a rough diamond" is a real good debut that sounds very much like Dream Theaters first album "When dream and day unite",the sound is quite similar and that?s also the bad side of this album.....coz the production is a bit fuzzy and lame,I would have wanted a much clearer sound with more bass and heavier drums.
Anyhow, the songs speaks for themselves like the epic piece "Waiting for the answer",the keyboard ecstasy of "Love remains the same",the strong opener "Secret dream" and the massive "Lord of the flies" (that contains a real cool reggae break).
With a better production on the next record,Mind Key could go pretty far.
