St.Louis quintet already has a 10 year history coz they were formed in 1995 but it took 8 years for their debut to be made and "Page avenue" as it?s called was a good one too. This very melodic posthardcore band became successful rather quick and toured a lot with the debut release so it felt only natural to thank their fans with the live album "Live in the lou" recorded in their hometown in Nov.2004. Now,Story of the year are back with a brand new album and this time they worked with hardcore producer Steve Evetts (Senses Fail) instead of John Feldmann - soundwise, there isn?t much that seperates these 2 studio albums coz the fans of the first one will recognize them instantly from first single "We don?t care anymore" that opens the album. Not a smash but quite good anyhow,I like their explosive sound and it feels like they have repeated the same formula on "In the wake of determination" - no unexpected turns or odd choruses.
Just like the debut, the new album contains 13 songs including the bonus track with the running time of 48 minutes and I just listened to "Page avenue" to refreshen my memory and it has the same length. This is the natural follow up to PA with all the classic ingredients from screamo emo to energetic riffs and melodic choruses. But I think there were a few more standout tracks on the first album so "In the wake..." doesn?t really reach the same fine level as PA but it?s no disappointment either. The 2005 effort from SOTY is pretty much like what I expected, the fans will be pleased and it will climb the charts but for the next album.........either write a bunch of killer tracks or do some changes in the sound coz I don?t think a 3rd studio album will be as fun to listen to if it?s a carbon copy of the first 2 albums.
ps.the song "Is this my fate he asked them" must be the heaviest track the band has written so far, nice!
