It’s impossible not to compare the last winner of American Idol David Cook with the two previous rockers Bo Bice(2005) and Chris Daughtry(2006). The ”rocker” concept follows the winning receipt once again in handpicked tunes that everyone is a strong single candidate. And like always is the songwriting really impressive with heroes this time like Raine Maida(Our Lady Peace), John Rzenik(Goo Goo Dolls), Zac Maloy(The Nixons), Kevin Griffin(Better Than Ezra) and Chris Cornell of Audioslave and Soundgarden. Add then hit makers like Cathy Dennis and the Norwegian duo Espionage and you have an almost complete record if you’re into slick modern rock without any surprises. Ok, the unreleased Injected tune ”Bar-ba-sol” is damn cool and very unexpected, but the other tunes are exactly what you can imagine from a big budget record from a winner of the American Idol. I personally think it’s little bit boring since it’s almost too perfect and lacks of identity with a microscopic perfection in every single detail. It feels more or less like that it’s all planned with a dose of Daughtry, Nickelback and Goo Goo Dolls that all works really well on radio and the charts around the globe. This doesn’t feel at all like as a David Cook record to me. It’s more like a product of a winning concept from a label that want to rule the charts for weeks and months. And that is not bad at all for sure. They want to make money to be able to survive and I guess it’s the same for this guy. But for me as a listener and heavy consumer of rock music it’s boring and gives me “just” an ok record. David Cook is a fantastic vocalist and we got some really catchy modern rock anthems with some of my heroes. But it’s exactly as I expected and that’s the problem!
P.S The one that decide about the cover design should get fired. Make-up, why….why…WHY!!!!
