This quintet has staked its career on writing songs that are conceived in the heart and come alive at the ears. Underwhelmed paid its dues moving up the ranks of the tough New York music scene. The band puts out an extraordinary set of music fueled by the Band’s raw energy, then is turbocharged by the emotional exchange between the group and its listener. Their album “Reveal” can be compared to the likes of Nickelback, Hinder, 3 Doors Down and Edgewater.
The band began in 1998, when singer Chris Amplo auditioned for twin brothers Mike Russo (bass) and Chris Russo (drums). Instantly, the UNDERWHELMED sound was born. After a chance meeting at the legendary CBGB, longtime friend of Amplo, guitarist Paul Boyle joined the trio and completed the song writing line-up. The final piece of the puzzle was placed in September 2003, with the addition of lead guitarist Mike Armstrong. Their newest album "Reveal" blends the alternative modern rock radio with mainly harder edges songs mixed with moody, friendly hooks and powerful production. If you close your eyes sometimes you will think this is Chad Kroeger singing. The album rocks hard in the beginning and stays through the whole album until it hits the slower ballad of the album “With You” which is a great addition to the flow of the album.
The title track from the album, “Reveal” could be the next single from the band as it has modern rock radio written all over it and this is the one that reminds me of Edgewater. Singer Chris Amplo has the voice that is very familiar which you can easily get comfortable with. These very catchy tunes will find singing along to in no time. “Freak (Like Me)” has to be the most Nickelback sounding tune of them all but they do show a real original side to them throughout the album. Other favorites include “With You,” “Reveal” and “Never Again.” Trust me this is not the last time you will hear from this band. If they can get past the aforementioned band references, then I think this album will do very well. Good, refreshing modern rock radio.
They´re like a pop version of Nickelback or why not Saving Abel but without the same strong choruses.
I can go for 3 on a good day but then I´m being nice.
I think this band is damn good! Yes, they have a familiar sound BUT...what band doesn't sound like another? Many bands sound alike. These guys have their "OWN" sound in my opinion and it is a killer sound! Good luck guys! (you won't need it though!)
Well Tom, I am going to say this to you once and once and for all. You hit the nail on the head with this one! Fantastic review man. I can hear the Nickelback, Hinder, 3 Doors Down and Edgewater references for sure!! That is the problem, I have albums that already sound like this.
"If they can get past the aforementioned band references, then I think this album will do very well. Good, refreshing modern rock radio." <-- I totally agree with that statement Tom!
It is a cool CD but easily forgettable.
WOW is all I can say to this band! I just downloaded their CD from itunes. I can't wait to crank my stereo and rock to this band UNDERWHELMED! Good luck guys!!
I saw these guys live once and had to buy their CD! I jam to them all day. These guys WILL be huge one day. Keep rockin.
These guys rock. All who don't think so...can kiss my A--!
The review is still awful but I meant to give the band 5 stars. Woops!
This review is awful. The band does not sound like Nickelback at all, but they definitely are familiar and commercial radio-worthy.
I think a 3 does Underwhelmed an injustice!!! 5 is more like it. Why this band isn't huge is beyond me. I wish them luck and success in the near future. ROCK ON !!!
I never heard of these guys before - but they ROCK! Tom's right - they sound a lot like Edgewater - and I LOVE Edgewater. Also, I think if you like 3 Doors Down and Staind, you'll Freak (no pun intended!) over Underwhelmed! I just hit iTunes and downloaded the CD. Can't wait to hit the gym and crank it!
I really love this record. I don't hear the Nickelback-thing. Maybe some Hinder, 3 Doors Down, Staind, heck even Creed. In my opinion, there's not a bad track on the whole record - period. I agree with Tom on "Reveal" being the next single. "Angel" is their first - just heard it on Sirius XM. The lead singer has some killer pipes and the hooks are big. Tom's right - you'll be singing along in no time. Definitely two thumbs up here!
