Do you miss the original Alice in Chains (AiC)? Here is a band with a singer that sounds like the late Layne Staley, sometimes so much that it is scary. Maybe it is the dual singing a la Alice that does the trick but I like it. There are also some Stone Temple Pilots, Tool and Godsmack vibes going on as well. All in all there is a nice Seattle-90’s sound to the album which I must say I like.
The Intro is an acoustic song but then the album bursts into full on rock songs. My favorite ones are Seasick, Broken Wing and Straight Line. The latter almost sporting some Velvet Revolver vibes, a very good song. What lift this album for me though are the vocals, even though they drown in the music sometimes they are really good. I think that the overall sound is what makes Cathartic stand out in the rock world. The album closes with another acoustic piece imaginatively called Exit.
For those of you who like hard rock with progressive hints this might be a cool album to investigate. Imagine a light-weight Tool with AiC vocals and you are about right. I did a review of a similar band earlier, the Swedish band Outshine. If you liked that album you will probably like this as well. This was a nice surprise though and a pretty good album too!
