Review

Just like Elvis fans, if you´re a collector of Kiss records, you´re in for a challenge because there must be countless of releases out there that would make any Kiss fan sweat. However, if you decide on just the basic studio and live albums, then there´s a deluxe edition of their classic 1977 record Love Gun that should be of highly interest.

This 2 CD set contains not only the original record, but also a second disc of unreleased demos, live tracks and an interview with Gene Simmons. The deluxe edition also contains a 24 page booklet with liner notes from the bandmembers about each and every song on the original album, plus exclusive photos and the preliminary sketch of Love Gun album cover by Ken Kelly.
The bonus disc features demos of the album tracks Plaster Caster, Love Gun and an instrumental version of Tomorrow and Tonight. If you´re an owner of their 2001 box set, you already know of the unreleased track Love Is Blind that didn´t make it onto Love Gun, on this deluxe edition, the band has included 3 more demos from 1977 that never made it to the official album.
Much Too Soon, Reputation and I Know Who You Are are all written by Gene Simmons with lead vocals by Gene, I think it was a good choice to leave out Much Too Soon and I Know Who You Are but Reputation is a really good song that could´ve been featured on either Simmons´ 1978 solo or Dynasty from 1979. The remaining 3 tracks are explosive live versions of Love Gun, Shock Me and Christine Sixteen, recorded on the Love Gun tour in 1977.

Here´s my review of the original album: Kiss was the first band in history to have 4 albums on the charts at the same time with Kiss Alive, Destroyer, Rock and roll over and Love Gun in 1977. Most songs were written on the Japan tour of the Rock and roll over album and the album was recorded between May 3rd - May 28th, it was also the first album to feature lead vocal performances from all four band members. The Love Gun artwork was done by Ken Kelly who also did Destroyer, these two are my favorite album covers with Kiss. We can find some of their greatest songs on this album with the title track "Love gun", "I stole your love", "Christine sixteen", "Shock me" and "Plaster caster".   The band thought about doing Jailhouse rock as a cover for the album but ended up doing The Crystals 1963 hit "Then he kissed me" instead, it was changed to "Then she kissed me". Paul was influenced by Deep Purple´s Burn when he wrote "I stole your love" and by Mott The Hoople´s The Golden age of rocknroll when he wrote "Tomorrow and tonight". Ace wrote the song "Shock me" after he was electrocuted in Florida before a show, Paul was working on a song called Christine sixteen when Gene stole the title and beat him to it but it wasn´t the first time they stole from eachother. Before the first album, Gene had a song called Black diamond when Paul stole the title and made it his own. Love Gun is nothing but a classic rock record that never goes out of style!

Did you know that?

When the KISS song "Strutter" was released in the 1970s, advocates for people with speech impediments tried to have the record pulled from shelves.
