Last year the grim reaper showed no mercy towards the music industry. One by one our most beloved musicians left us and we on earth cried for their souls.
Now although the death of Prince and George Michael shocked me David Bowies passing got to me the most. After hearing of all things he passed from cancer that hit home hard. David was not just a dreamer but also a doer of many things. He forever changed the face of rock and fashion. He influenced us all in some form of way and I think I can speak for many in saying his work will forever live on.
When I heard 'Blackstar' and saw the music video for it I right away picked up on the symbolisms of death along with previous Bowie song references. The biggest symbol of death being the astronaut suit representing Major Tom and the lifting of the helmet lid revealing a skull. The video later shows a full skelton floating in space, heaven. Released just before Thanksgiving 2015 I couldn't help but feel something was up in the Bowie camp. It was of course later on we would all find out what was truly behind this song yet alone whole record. 'Blackstar' was the song of letting us know he hadn't much time left to live.
FUN FACT: Blackstar is actually the stage for when a star in outter space collapses and eventually becomes no more.
'Lazarus' I like to think of as the swan song. Its clealy about a man ready to go to the afterlife and reflecting on his accomplishments. I love how David took something that many of us are afraid of facing (death) and turned it into a masterpiece of art. This is what music is all about, freedom.
I'm hoping by not enclosing my full thoughts on Blackstar will encourage you to further explore the album yourself. For those that appreciate music and just about every other art form out there I strongly reccomend you give this a listen.
