Painkillers is Brian Fallon's debut album, produced by the hero Butch Walker. A perfect collaboration with Butch classical roots and cruel sense of the right sound together with Brian's ability to write simple and appealing songs.
The album sounds like one would expect, like his former band, The Gaslight Anthem, but in a more singer-songwriter oriented package.
Guess that he is tired of being compared to Bruce Springsteen, but something else is actually impossible as they have much in common stylistically and even geographically, as both hails from New Jersey.
Painkillers is however, clearly more punk than Springsteen and it was very long ago he dared to have a simple and clean production we’re given here. So basically we get heartland rock in a straightforward and very charming format.
Really love Brian's way of writing songs, much because that they contain so much of warmth and soul. Is thinking of "Steve McQueen", written together with the former Semisonic front-man Dan Wilson, that is a wonderful and simple pop song. Even the more up-tempo driven "A Wonderful Life" and "Rosemary" are favorites here with their catchy and positive melodies.
So if you like the classic Jersey Shore sound, this is a given purchase as it is a modern classic in the genre without doubt.
