Los Angeles-based goth rock quartet Dommin was discovered by Dirty Icon Productions, a company founded by producers Logan Mader and Lucas Banker. We got the chance to talk to frontman, guitarist and songwriter Kristofer Dommin and here it goes…..
How have things changed since signing with Roadrunner records and releasing your debut Love Is Gone?
Kristofer Dommin:I think the main change is being able to have the financial support to get ourselves on tour in the US and in Europe.
You recently had the chance to tour with HIM, how did that go? Do you have any interesting stories from the tour?
Kristofer Dommin:The HIM tour in both Europe and US were amazing. Their fans were really responsive and understood the music. There were a couple of interesting nights on this tour. The females go pretty crazy over Ville and were pretty much violently elbowing each other to get to front and center. So during our set, we'd occasionally see these cat-fights breakout right in front of us.
Besides HIM, what are some of your favorite bands you have had the chance to perform with?
Kristofer Dommin:The Birthday Massacre was one of the funnest tours for us.It was our first nationwide tour and those people were just so much fun to be around.
Billy James:Lacuna Coil was also amazing. We toured with them twice, once in the US and once in Europe. It felt like being with family.
Dommin is the type of band who will appeal to a certain crowd with your Goth look and sound, but do you feel that your music will appeal to a wider range of people if they take the time to listen to
the band? If so why?
Kristofer Dommin:I think that fact is already evident in the people that come to our shows. There are certainly those who love dark culture there, but you'll find people from all walks of life, all ages, both male and female at our shows. The aesthetic may be a bit but the music is just rock 'n' roll and the content is universal.Unless people stop falling in love or having their heart-broken, there will always be those who appreciate Dommin's music.
Personally I didn't originally feel satisfied when I listened to the album, but after taking some more time to listen to the lyrics and find things to relate to I really began to see why Dommin is gaining so much support. What have others said about the album and the band in general?
Kristofer Dommin:The wonderful thing that I find is that people are really falling in love with the entire album, not just one song or even a few songs. They say it's one of the rare albums they have that they can enjoy from beginning to end and for weeks and weeks on end. The only real criticism I get is that they think we still sound better live. But to me, that's a compliment to our live show.
I read that Kristofer does the majority of the songwriting; I was wondering if you all have some input on songs or does Kristofer take your stories and experiences and create something himself? Basically I am just interested in how the whole writing process goes
for Dommin.
Kristofer Dommin:I pretty much go off an my own and create the majority of the lyrics and music.I'll record demos of the songs mostly complete and show the band what I've got. Then, there will always be things we work out or little parts of each member's personality that season the song.
Billy James:Occasionally there will be some musical collaboration in the band just to add to what Kris has created, but the story-telling is all from Kris' personal experiences. He's got a way with words.
Dommin just looks and sounds like a dark brooding band,, are you guys downers to hang out with lol….or do you just let everything out on stage? Do you get the chance to hang out with many fans at your shows or has it been pretty limited for you? It's just always great to hear that bands get out there and hang out with the people.
Kristofer Dommin:I consider myself quite a hopeful and optimistic person.Anyone that has had any interaction will probably say the same.
Billy James:We pride ourselves in our relationship with our fans. Anyone who takes a look at our website or Facebook or MySpace page will no doubt see that we are interacting with our fans at every show and connecting with them on a personal level.
Kristofer Dommin:I also do my best to respond to every message we get. It's proving to be more difficult lately, though.
Back to the album,, My favorite song on the album is "Without End". It is as close to romantic the band gets on the album since it is about an unhealthy obsessive love. Is this one based on anyone's personal experiences? How much of the material is based on personal experiences would you say?
Kristofer Dommin:Yeah, this album is mostly about heart-break.I think the romance will reveal itself on the 3rd album. All the songs I write are based on personal experience.I don't really know any other way to write that is going to capture the honest passion I want to hear in music.
I also read that Kristofer had most of the songs for this album written in 2006. I know it is early into the release of Love Is Gone but have any new songs been written for the next album?
Kristofer Dommin:The majority of the songs for the next album are ready to go aside from working out the minor details. But I think I've got a good track listing already.I can't wait to get back in the studio and get these other songs out.
