John Elefante is back with his first album in 10 years and even longer in waiting for a new Mastedon album but Elefante and his brother Dino with long time friend Dave Amato, finally deliver a new Mastedon album that features a collaboration with Kerry Livgren for the first time in 26 years. Kansas hasn't released anything new since 2000 so my friends, this is as close as we get a new Kansas record. Elefante is back! Track by track comment
Revolution of mind, a great Kansas-esque rocker that could've been taken from their 1983 album "Drastic measures"
Slay your demons, the album continues with an ultimate pomp rock song in the vein of the first Mastedon album "It's a jungle out there" (1989)
Nowhere without your love, a beautiful slow rocker with a fantastic vocal performance from John, the song bring thoughts to his first solo album "Windows of heaven" from 1995
One day down by the lake, an 11 minute long progrock anthem from Livgren and Elefante that takes the listener back to the early days of Kansas, stunning!
Water into wine, an upbeat melodic rocker that has traces of the 1990 Mastedon album "Lofcaudio" and once again, I'm so happy to hear Elefante rocking again
Questions, one of my favorites on the album, a typical midtempo Elefante classic following the sound of his solo albums
You can't take anything, a more AOR-ish song with a mix of Kansas/Elefante era and the Mastedon albums.
Lying, a nice and soft midtempo track in the same vein as Elefante's solo stuff
The western world, another fine midtempo track that sounds like a lost Mastedon song but done in a modern way
That's what you do, ten tracks into the album and not yet a filler as far as the eye can see, lovely harmonies in this awesome semiballad.
Dust in the wind, a piano based version of the Kansas classic and what a wonderful version it is, bravo!
