Delicate, Enchanting melodies and a melodic foreground are only a few words that begin to describe Jordan Critz's debut album Nightlights and Melted Ice. The moderate tempo Pop/Rock songs featured on this 13 song album remind you a movie soundtrack that plays along a sad romantic movie. The vocals on this album are very rich and passionate whilst delicate and pure. Many of the songs on the album are radio ready for a modern pop/rock station and would fly. Jordan breaks the stereotypes of classically trained musicians hopping on the “pop” train.
Hailing from Fort Worth, TX, he effectively takes the leap from Debussy and Mozart to the pop/rock scene – without one pause. With a blended sound of Bono, Bruce Hornsby and the Counting Crows, Critz brings a fresh sound of post-90s vintage guitars, rock piano and lyrics that bridge the gap of human pain and spiritual wonder. Critz was classically trained on the piano and classical guitar at a very young age..Because of this, he is just at home on a piano as he is on the guitar, Celtic whistles and other various instruments. It was his love and unorthodox approach to music that fueled his early start. By the age of 7, he could be found improvising and creating compositions of his own.
The album opens with a mid tempo rock song and wailing vocal display that will have you going in the back of your head "wow this guys has a voice!" Jordan's production on the album is pretty much flawless. I would have never guessed that this artists wasn't signed. From the first listen this album has every flavor of a national pop/rock artists. I guess thats what you get when your classically trained, it must come natural. You can tell this is his forte of sound. Jordan did almost all the musicanship on the record, guitar, piano, bass, organ, glockenspiel, strings, loops and programming, time and space. He was helped out by Brent Milligan on bass, Tim Jones on drums, Nate Coon drums as well and Matt Boswell on some of the backing vocals that weren't done by Jordan himself.
The songs resemble all that pop.rock has to offer mixed with the airy guitars and spacey delayed sounds of The Edge from U2. Resembling Bono at times, and an almost Daughtry kind of rock n roll, this wont be the last thing you hear from Jordan, he has just begun to make a name for himself and proves it on this debut. This is an enchanting album with pure hearted passion. Jordan displays his amazing musicianship and voices his soul for the world to hear in this killer debut record. He’s also the owner of Third Orbit Studios in Dallas, TX. His debut release, Nightlights and Melted Ice, is a symbolism of hope in the dark; of taking steps on faith and the hope of new life after the winter has come to an end.
