When I heard Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol fame was working on yet another side project I was kind of skeptical to be honest. Not because I didn't love his previous side projects, Reindeer Section and Listen...Tanks!, or his main band (whom I love), moreso because he had been quoted as saying this album was inspired by country music and the songs he wrote were considered "country tinged". Not being the biggest fan of American country music, it definitely threw up a red flag. Well, let me say, I was wrong. This album is not perfect. But the parts that work, really work. And it is beautiful. The lead single from the disc is "Dead American Writers", a catchy, uptempo (well, for this album at least) track that takes a few listenings to fully understand and appreciate. If you are looking for uptempto arena rock, this record is not for you. With that being said, most of the songs on the album would fit nicely on a Snow Patrol record in a different form. A prime example of that is the track, "That Silver Necklace", which is my favorite song on the album. This track includes the simple guitar of a Snow Patrol song (albeit this time its acoustic, not electric) and an epic chorus that is so catchy I sing it in my sleep. Other highlights for me included the Zooey Deschenel (yes, of She & Him and acting fame) duet "Get On The Road", as well as Tom Smith's (of The Editors) contribution "The Good Book". Peter Buck (guitarist of REM) adds a heavy array of mandolin and lovely guitar hooks on every track and Garret "Jacknife" Lee (Snow Patrol's long time producer) adds his signature style of production to the effort. The CD released in the UK on July 12, 2010 and will see an American release on September 28. This is a must have for fan's of good music. Although this album is not perfect, I found myself singing along. Throw it on your iPod, go to a local park with a nice view and just soak it all in. Just know these songs aren't exactly epic arena rock, but for what they are, they're pretty damn good. Lightbody...making a slow, country album? Hey, it works. Check it out. It's worth a listen.
Kajs comments:
Tired Pony is the side project from Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody featuring R.E.M guitarist Peter Beck, Grammy award producer Jacknife Lee and members from Belle & Sebastian and Editors. These songs wouldn´t fit Snow Patrol´s sound so Gary formed this interesting band, and the result is the full length album "The place we ran from". A grower indeed, where the songs goes in the alternative style of folk rock mixed with Country. Not a bad combination at all if you ask me, I like the mood of this album and the story telling songs hold the listener in a grip. Imagine yourself sitting on a cliff by the ocean in the fall, feeling the cold waves sweeping against your face. Music is about emotions and Tired Pony gets me emotional for sure.
